Choosing a POS System in Zimbabwe: What Actually Matters

Choosing a POS System in Zimbabwe: What Actually Matters

Not every POS built for the US or Europe holds up in Zimbabwe. Load-shedding, dual currency, and ZIMRA compliance are not edge cases here — they’re daily reality. Here’s what actually matters when you’re choosing a POS for a Zimbabwean business.

Dual Currency Support (USD/ZWG)

Zimbabwean businesses routinely price and sell in both USD and ZWG, often on the same till, on the same day. A POS built elsewhere may bolt this on awkwardly or not support it at all. Check that the system lets you set a daily exchange rate and reports cleanly in both currencies — not just display one on the receipt. See our guide on managing USD and ZWG sales.

Offline Mode for Load-Shedding

A POS that stops working the moment the internet drops is a liability, not a tool. Look for genuine offline mode — sales recorded locally on the device and synced automatically once connectivity returns — rather than a system that simply refuses to process a sale without a live connection.

EcoCash and Mobile Money

Cash, card, and mobile money often all show up in the same till drawer here. Your POS should record and report each payment method separately without extra manual work, so your reconciliation at the end of the day is accurate.

Fiscalisation-Ready

If you’re VAT-registered — or expect to be soon — your POS should either already interface with ZIMRA FDMS or have a clear path to add it. Retrofitting fiscalisation onto a system that was never built for it is far more painful than choosing one that already supports it. Read what ZIMRA fiscalisation actually requires before you commit to a system.

Local Support

When something breaks, “email us and we’ll get back to you in 3-5 business days” doesn’t cut it for a business that needs to open tomorrow morning. Prioritise a provider with local support — ideally reachable on WhatsApp — who understands Zimbabwean conditions, not a generic help desk in another timezone.

Putting It Together

These five factors — dual currency, offline mode, mobile money, fiscalisation-readiness, and local support — matter more here than the feature lists international review sites focus on. For a broader look at evaluating any POS provider, see our guide on 5 factors to consider when choosing a POS system.
